Characterization of the Psychological and Neurobiologic Manifestations in Preadolescents and Adolescents with Chromosome 22q11 Deletion (BG01-070)
Principal Investigator: Vandana Shashi, MD
Study Co-Coordinator: Margaret N. Berry, MS
Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to look for learning, behavioral and psychological problems in children with 22q11 deletion syndrome. We are enrolling approximately 70 children with the condition between the ages of 7 and 12 years. We also will enroll healthy children, who are matched by age and sex, to serve as control subjects.
Methods and Measures: A number of psychological tests will be administered to your child. This will provide us with data on the intelligence (IQ), behavior, social and emotional functioning of each child. A head MRI will be obtained, to give us information on the structure of the brain. We will also obtain a blood or saliva sample for DNA testing, for a common change within several of the remaining copies of the genes in the chromosome 22q11 region.
Benefits and Risks: A full report of the psychological tests will be given to you. For children with learning difficulties, this information could be used for educational purposes. The risks are potential embarrassment and/or anxiety about the test results, fatigue due to lengthy psychological testing (3-4 hours) and fear of the MRI. The tests will be spread out over two or more sessions to decrease fatigue and earplugs etc. will be provided to reduce the noise from the MRI. The blood draw may be uncomfortable, but every measure will be taken to minimize this. Obtaining the saliva sample is painless and is not associated with side effects.
A stipend of $100.00 will be paid to each participant at the end of the study.
